Objectives for B. Sc. Programs

  1. To apply a multidisciplinary approach to assessment of national security issues by training students on program specific core curriculum that provides a strong foundation of both knowledge and skills in the disciplines concerned.
  2. To enable all students to achieve mastery of both discipline-specific and cross-cutting core competencies.

B. Sc. Disaster Risk Management

Understand disaster analytics such as use of ICT tools in crowd sourcing, working offline cache, dataset for demographic information, miss and found person register. (ii) Risk and Vulnerability assessment, GPS mapping and analysis. (iii) Advocacy and Communication, (iv) Humanitarian Intervention (v) Rehabilitation.

B.Sc. Criminology

Understand crime analytics such as: Ethnicity and Crime, Environmental influences and crimes, Use of crime solving technology and other forensic tools and sciences, Use of ICT tools in crime investigations and interventions. Serial Killers, Profiling, Cold case management; Criminology; Victimology; Crime scene investigation; Penology; Alternative sentencing; Case Management and others.

 

Objectives for M. Sc. Programs

  1. To equip students with professional competencies in understanding society as a whole vis-à-vis crime and punishment
  2. To train personnel who may be able to provide leadership in enhancing national security and peace to conduct research and provide pre-crime safety tips, or consultative services to the community.

M.Sc. Criminology:

Understand crime analytics including investigative tools and case resolution; Develop Prosecutory skills, Understand Ethnicity and Crime; Environmental influences and crimes; Advocacy and Risk Communication; Advances in Technology vis-à-vis Criminology; Penology; Alternative sentencing and Police Science and how the law works.

M.Sc. Disaster Risk Management:

Understand crime analytics such as Ethnicity and disasters; Gender and vulnerable population in disaster; Sociology of disasters; Use of ICT tools, learn how to use dataset for demographic information, miss and found person register; Vulnerability assessment, mapping and analysis of disaster prone areas; Climate change and Adaptation; Environmental and Sanitation impact on Health Emergencies; Community Based Disaster Issues, Quarantine and Isolation implications on civil liberties and human rights; Humanitarian interventions and development ethics

Ministry of Interior/Ghana Police Service, Immigration, Ghana Fire Service, Customs and Excise, Small Arms Commission, The Judicial Service, Law firms and Chambers, Banks and other Financial Services, Insurance industry and other Finance companies, Private Detective Firms and Personal Security Firms, NGOs, Civil Society Organizations, Mining and Manufacturing companies, Transportation industry, Schools and Universities, Churches and Mosques, Event Organizers, Government and community agencies, Media, Communications Experts, and Public Relations Officers, Research institutions

 

Admission Requirement

  1. Candidates must have credit passes in six (6) subjects with overall aggregate of 36/24 at the WASSCE/SSSCE respectively. Three of the six subjects must be core subjects: English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science or Social Studies and three must be in relevant electives.
    For purposes of admission, a credit pass in: WASSCE means A1 – C6. SSSCE means A – D
  2. Holders of the General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level must, in addition to credit passes in five (5) GCE ‘O’ Level subjects (including English and Mathematics), have, at least, two (2) passes in the relevant subjects.
  3. Applicants with the General Business Certificate Examination (GBCE) results should have credit passes (A-D) in six (6) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects including English Language and Mathematics plus three (3) relevant elective subjects.
  4. Holders of the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE)/ International Baccalaureate (IB) must possess at least Grades A*/A-C in English, Mathematics and Biology at the Standard (SL)/’O’ Level, in addition to three Higher Level (HL – A to C)/’A’ Level (A to D)/IB 2 (A to C) grades in the relevant subjects.

International Students: The application procedure and timetable are the same for both international and domestic candidates. Transcripts or other supporting documents submitted by international candidates in a language other than English must be translated and certified as copies of the original document(s). International students for whom English is a second language must submit either a paper-based or internet-based TOEFL score. The minimum passing grade required is 65 for Internet Based Test (iBT) and 550 for the Paper-Based Test (PBT).

ALL APPLICATIONS WILL BE VETTED BY THE NATIONAL ACCREDITATION BOARD.

Admission Requirement for Master of Science Programs

Candidates seeking admission to M. Sc. degree programs must:

  1. Have obtained a good first degree (at least a second class division) in an appropriate field of study from a recognized university/analogous institution.
  2. Submit official transcript of academic record.
  3. Submit names of two referees, one of whom must be a former Lecturer.
  4. Satisfy any additional requirements prescribed by the Institute’s Department, (e.g. entrance examination, selection interview).

 

Organization of Programs

M.Sc. programs are for one year and in two parts. The first part consists of two semesters of course work and the second part is made up of writing a Dissertation which is a requirement for the award of the M. Sc. Degree.

B.Sc. Programs are four years in duration, including internship or attachment, independent study and a long essay in place of a Dissertation for the award of B. Sc. Degree.
